Region & Higher - Norma Vazquez

1. Describe the purposes for and various stages of formative evaluation of technology plan.

The purpose of the evaluation is to gather data regarding a current process so that it can evaluated in order to make modification to instruction to make it more efficient and effective.

The various stages are as follows:
  • one-on-one evaluation: clarity (clear message to learners), impact (learner attitudes and achievement of goals), and feasibility (based on resources) are accessed; the most obvious errors are noted;
  • small group evaluation: determine effectiveness of changes made after one-on-one evaluation; can the learners carry out instruction without teacher; use the 3 components outlined in one-on-one evaluation in additional to administering an attitude questionnaire to gather information regarding the effectiveness of instruction
  • field trial - determine effectiveness of changes made after small group evaluation; to determine if context is appropriate

2. Describe your instruments used in a formative evaluation.

The instruments that I will use for the formative evaluation include the following:

*For the one-on-ones i will conduct observations and ask informal questions to determine the learner's understanding.
*For the one-on-ones I will conduct questionnaires since observations will be mainly handled in the one-on-ones
*For the field trials I will conduct assessments

3. Collect data according to a formative evaluation plan for a given set of technology plan or instructor presentation.

Most of the objectives in my plan are unattainable because of the lack of funding and resources; therefore, I am unable to collect data. Hopefully, come this new fiscal year we'll be able to move forward with the goals in my technology plan. Additionally, I just found out that we are actually working on creating a technology plan for our division that is alignment with the university's goals. I am not part of the committee but I will obtain a copy for review to see if any of the goals and objectives fall in the proposed plan.

  1. Norma,
You write that many of your objectives are unattainable because of lack of funding and resources. I think writing a technology plan that presents a vision of an ideal world has some merit. It can open a dialog with those who set priorities and funding. I have found that even if an idea or proposal is not accepted at first, the seed is planted and may have more success in later funding cycles.

It seems that several of us are in this situation of creating a technology plan that may not be accepted through no fault of the plan. I think this has still been a valuable exercise to work through this process.

    2. I agree. It has been a great excercise and eye-opener for many of us especially when you find out that there is no technology plan.

  2. Norma,
I feel your pain with the no funding clashing with your technology plan. I am hitting the same walls. Like Susan said, hopefully, we are planting some seeds.

    1. I agree with you Kayla. Is there at least some hope for any of your objectives. I think maybe with time there is a possibility of being to proceed with some of them but not as quickly as I would like.

  3. Norma, you can still collect data for the areas not related to the funding issues. Let me know if you need some support.
