Beaumont ISD-Week 11, Step 8 Tanya Anderson

1.      Describe the purposes for and various stages of formative evaluation of technology plan.
The purpose of formative evaluation is to make certain that the goals of the technology plan are being achieved. There are four distinct phases of formative evaluation. Phase 1 is Expert Review. Experts review a rough version of the instruction with or without the evaluator present to determine its strengths and weaknesses. They can be content experts, technical experts, designers, or instructors. Phase 2 is One-to-One. In this phase one learner at a time reviews the instruction with the evaluator. The evaluator observes the learner using the instruction, notes the learner’s comments, and questions the learner during and after the instruction. Phase 3 would be Small Group. In this phase the evaluator tries out the unfinished instruction with a group of learners and records their performance and comments.  The fourth phase is the Field Test.  In this phase, the evaluator observes the instruction being tried out in a realistic environment with a group of learners (Tessmer, 1993).
2. Describe your instruments used in a formative evaluation.
There are several instruments to be used in a formative evaluation to collect data.  You may use questionnaires, surveys, interviews, observations, and testing (Rieber, n.d.).  Surveys or questionnaires can be created to evaluate the use of technology within the classroom.  One on the ways that I evaluate my students is by observation. This method is simple and quick.  When evaluating the administrative support I would create surveys and conduct observations.

3. Collect data according to a formative evaluation plan for a given set of technology plan or instructor presentation.
The subsequent techniques will be utilized when gathering data concerning the technology plan. Needs assessment survey will be performed to determine the strengths and weakness of the technology plan. Observations will be conducted to evaluate the progress of planned staff development activities. To evaluate the purchasing of new hardware and software, a record of what is on hand will be kept.
To evaluate the budget portion of the plan, an observation of each campus technology budget will be conducted.
To evaluate the professional development section of the plan, I would use the teacher portfolio to gather data regarding the integration of technology in the curriculum.

  1. Who do you plan on giving the questionnaires and surveys too? Are you going to give them to teachers and/or administrators? I like that you observe your students as a way of evaluation. This is a good way to see if they know what is going on.

  2. Tanya,

Have you ever considered conducting a parent survey to find out how much they know about technology to determine if they can help at home? I mostly use email or text messages now to communicate with my parents. Its faster and you can have a running record of conversations. This lets me know that my parents are using technology so therefore they can help their children with some things or at least have some idea how things may work.
